Insomnia is a common sleep disorder in which the person finds it almost impossible to sleep. It generally affects the aged person. But now a day it is also seen in young people. Some people suffering from insomnia may fall asleep without a problem but they will wake up just a couple of hours later. For others, the problem may be just opposite, or they have trouble with both falling asleep and staying asleep. The two main symptoms of insomnia are anxiety and depression. Insomnia symptoms include poor concentration and short memory. Insomniac people usually awake prematurely during sleep and have trouble falling asleep again. Insomniacs feel irritability without any obvious reason. It is especially experienced during the day. Some medications have insomnia as a side effect. If this happens then am immediate medical advice is recommended.

There are basically two types of insomnia. Primary and secondary. Secondary means that the insomnia is a symptom or a side-effect of some other problem or medicines. The problems causing secondary insomnia include heart & lung disease, pain, anxiety, depression, medicines that can delay or disrupt sleep as a side-effect, stimulants or depressants (caffeine, tobacco, alcohol), and another sleep disorder, such as restless legs syndrome; a poor sleep environment; or a change in sleep routine. Primary insomnia is not a side-effect of medicines or another medical problem. It is its own disorder, and generally persists for least a month, and quite possibly even longer.

It is often possible to fight insomnia with simple home remedies. But if the insomnia crosses two weeks and you start feeling groggy, disoriented, acutely irritated and totally lost, it is time you take professional insomnia help. You should always keep in mind that prevention is better than cure. A timely medical intervention may save your life.
